Guide to visiting MahaNakhon Skywalk in Bangkok

King Power MahaNakhon is a supertall skyscraper in Bangkok, Thailand, it’s the tallest building in Thailand by roof height, the tower stands 314 meters (1,030 ft) tall, and is situated in the central business district of the city.
The rooftop of King Power MahaNakhon is the highest accessible area in the city of Bangkok, offering impressive panoramic view of the city. It’s opened to public as an observation deck a few months after King Power group purchased the building from its original owner in April 2018.

Visitors can access to the building’s 74th, 75th floors and the 78th floor (the rooftop). The 74th floor is the main indoor observation deck, the 75th floor is the secondary indoor observation deck and a transfer floor to board the elevator to get to the rooftop.
The rooftop is an outdoor open-air viewing platform, it features a cantilevered glass skywalk, which is one of the world’s largest and highest glass trays, and “The Peak”, which is the highest observation platform in Thailand.

The admission tickets for King Power MahaNakhon Skywalk can be booked by clicking here. The ticket price fluctuates irregularly throughout the year, but it generally does not exceed US$28. For an observatory that contains outdoor space and glass skywalk, this price is quite low, especially when compared to that of observatories on skyscrapers in the United States, for example, the entry fee to the observation deck on the Empire State Building is at least US$44, the building’s height is almost the same as that of MahaNakhon, and there’s no glass skywalk.

The opening hours of MahaNakhon Skywalk is 10:00 to 24:00 daily, the last admission is at 23:00, the outdoor observation deck on the rooftop closes a few hours earlier (the exact time changes frequently, it closes at 18:30 on the day I visited), so if you want to visit the rooftop then don’t go too late, it’s recommended to arrive the tower before the dusk, so that you can see both day views and night views in one time.

The address of King Power MahaNakhon is 114 Narathiwas Road, Silom, Bangrak, Bangkok. It’s not necessary to know its address since the tower is easy to find for its significant height and the unique appearance.
If you’re wandering at some places near the tower simply walk towards it, if you are at your hotel or some other places in Bangkok, then the most popular way to get there is by taking the city’s BTS Skytrain, take Silom line, get off at Chong Non Si Station, leave from Exit 3, then walk towards the tower for just 1 minute you will arrive there.

The entrance is at the east side of the tower (the side faces to BTS station). You will see a statue of a peculiar elephant in front of the entrance.

Once you get in the building, you will see the ticketing counter on your left, you can buy tickets there or change your e-ticket to paper tickets if you have booked the tickets online in advance. Then you will go through the security check, just like in airports, you can’t bring water into the Skywalk observatory.

After the security check, a staff will take a photo for you, and then you can walk a few steps through a futuristic corridor to take the high-speed elevator.

Once you are inside the elevator and the door closed, the walls of the elevator will turn into a video screen that shows many most popular attractions in Bangkok from a bird’s eye perspective that moves fast, as like you are flying though these attractions in the city.
For the wonderful video and the fast speed of the elevator, you will not realize that 50 seconds have passed and you have arrived 74th floor.

The 74th floor of the tower is a spacious indoor observation hall, the floor is square shaped, all four sides are floor-to-ceiling windows, offering unobstructed 360 degree view of the city.

Many landmark buildings in Bangkok can be clearly seen from the observation deck, such as Baiyoke Tower II, State Tower, Iconsiam Towers, Empire Tower, etc. Let’s take a look at some pictures I took on the observation deck.

In the picture shown below, you can see numerous buildings far below the perspective, at further in the same direction, there’s the Chao Phraya River, and you can see two towers that are topped with spires standing by the river, those are Iconsiam Towers, the taller one is the tallest building in Bangkok by standard height, as you can see the spire contributes significantly on its height, its roof is not as high as that of MahaNakhon.

The giant lower structure on the left of the Iconsiam Towers is the Iconsiam Mall, it’s the largest shopping mall in Bangkok and one of the largest in the world.

In the next picture shown below, you can see a riverside building that is topped with a golden dome, that is the State Tower, the tower houses the world’s highest open-air restaurant.

Before 2016, the tallest building in the city had been the Baiyoke Tower II, this white colored tower can be seen in the distance from the observation deck. Not far from it, there is a large meadow, which is the horse racing venue of The Royal Bangkok Sports Club.

And on the right side of the horse racing venue, you can see a large green area with a lake, that’s the Lumphini Park, which is the central park of Bangkok.

On the south side of the observation deck, you can see the Empire Tower, which is composed of six tubes of different heights, it’s the tallest all office building in Thailand, the building’s total floor area is larger than any other building in Thailand.

Some landmarks that are not large in size or too far away can be seen clearer using the telescopes, which can be found at the corners of the observation deck.

There’s an escalator connecting 74th floor and 75th floor, you can take the escalator to 75th floor.

From 75th floor, you can take a glass elevator to the rooftop, alternatively, you can climb to there through a spiral staircase.

The rooftop is an outdoor viewing platform, you can feel the breeze of the air in the sky. And Electropop musics are played by several speakers set on the edges of the terrace, one of the songs I heard is “Go With It” by Oliver.

The rooftop has two levels: the first level is 310 meters off the ground, it features a rooftop bar and the glass tray; the second level, named The Peak, is 314 meters off the ground, you can reach there by climbing a few steps, the steps have seats for visitors to sit on.

The first level has protective glasses on the edges, so you still have to see through the glass to see the views like on 74th floor. Luckily, The Peak has no glasses, only handrail, so you can directly see the clear views of the city. Here you can see a very huge green area to the southeast, that is Bang Krachao, an artificial island on the Chao Phraya River, it’s a jungle oasis and is commonly referred to as Bangkok’s Green Lung.

The Peak of MahaNakhon is an ideal place to enjoy the view of sunset, you can see the sunset over a perfect horizon.

The most interesting thing on the rooftop is the glass skywalk, it’s a large glass tray that extends over the southern edge of the rooftop. You can sit, stand or walk on the glass tray and see the streets and buildings directly under your feet. The glass is very clear so when you are standing or walking on it you will feel like no glass is under you, you need to be very courageous to walk on it, I found most people who were standing on it don’t dare to look down.
When you are on the glass tray, taking pictures of the views through the glass is not allowed, visitors can only take the photos of glass tray by standing out of it. From the picture below you can get a glimpse of how the glass tray is like, but in fact when you standing on it and directly look down, the feeling is quite different, which is much more thrilling.

When you want to leave the rooftop, take the glass elevator again to go back to 75th floor, from where you can go back to 74th floor via the escalator or take the elevator to directly go to the ground floor if you want to leave. I recommend you to stay longer on 74th floor to enjoy the night view of the city (if you visit the tower during dusk as I suggested earlier, then it’s time to enjoy the night view).

The night view of Bangkok is very spectacular, lights on skyscrapers are lit up and make the scenery more impressive. Take a look at some pictures below.

A part of space on 74th floor is designed like a bar, where when night comes, a DJ will be playing electronic musics, you can order a drink and take a seat near the windows to enjoy the night view and the musics.

When you want to leave, go to 75th floor via the escalator and ask a staff to escort you to take the elevator. The elevator will take you to a King Power duty-free shopping area at the bottom floors, from where you can buy some souvenirs or take escalators to get to the ground floor, then you can exit at the entrance where you entered the tower.

After exit the tower, don’t forget to look up at the tower, the night view of King Power MahaNakhon is very attractive with the decoration of dynamic illumination.
